Scholarships And Grants
Currently enrollment for African American students is at its highest level ever. Scholarships and Grants make it possible for you to gain an education beyond high school. The best part about college grants is they never have to be repaid! For many minority students with limited financial resources, going to school would be almost impossible without this assistance.
In 2010 the average cost for a four year college is a little over $26,000 a year. Community and public colleges are much less expensive, coming in at an average of $4500. Luckily there are thousands of federal, state, and other funded programs, that African American students can use as way to help pay for college. Since many private and public colleges and universities offer college financial aid, students have easy access to information about it. Looking online and meeting with your high school counselor should be your first step. Since grants and scholarships take a while to get, students should apply as early as possible, usually before you graduate high school. If for some reason you did not graduate high school in the traditional sense, then there are college grants for those who have earned their General Equivalency Diploma.
Scholarships for African-Americans are always increasing due to the high demand for more opportunities to earn the American dream. The ever increasing number of students in school has also brought the need for institutions and local companies to create more programs for African Americas only students. There are also certain industries whose members of other minorities are dominant; and in order to keep in check the opportunities being provided to certain other groups of minority citizens in the US, sponsors have begun to provide more grants and scholarships. One of the largest organizations that helps African-Americans get a chance to go to college in this country is The United Negro Fund. This organization supports African-American students fully so that they may be able to earn high paying white collar jobs and to become more self supportive. Other well known scholarships sources are the Sallie Mae fund, Malcolm X Scholarship for Exceptional Courage, and the Ron Brown Scholar Program. There are thousands out there! Take time to search the internet for what’s available. Make sure that you check within your own community to see what tuition assistance is offered.
To apply for college grant money, the first step is to always thoroughly complete the legendary FAFSA form. This will establish what your financial needs are. There will be many documents, form and papers that must be completed by the student. If you are not sure about something do not hesitate to seek the help of your parents, high school counselors, and the college financial aid department. If you are in your last year of high school, then you should start early to prepare by researching your situation and getting help from your counselor. It should go without saying that you will need to take the appropriate college entrance examinations, which is also very important. It is always a good idea to start taking these exams as early as possible. Taking them in your junior year is a good start. High scoring students may be awarded scholarships in addition to other forms of aid well before you graduate.
